Achievement in Paediatric Cardiology

Brig Gen Nurun Nahar Fatema Begum is the pioneer Pediatric Cardiologist of Bangladesh and she has established the concept of Congenital Cardiac intervention in the country, before that Open Heart Surgery was the only option for treatment and that was even not available as routine. Established Pediatric Cardiology Unit at CMH Dhaka in 1998, which is the first ever and only Pediatric Cardiology unit of the country over years which is capable of dealing with all types of Pediatric Cardiac emergencies and interventions.

Following first ever trans-catheter interventions (Non-surgical curative treatment) in Bangladesh were performed by her and published in national and international journals.

PHILANTHROPIC WORKS

Wadood Moimunnessa foundation: It was the brain child of Brig Gen Nurun Nahar Fatema Begum and was established in 2005 with support of family and siblings. This is a family foundation which conducts many academic, Medical and charitable activities. She plan, oversee and manage funding (personal funding or through fundraising activities) for the following activities of the foundation:

- - Scholarships are given on a regular basis to meritorious poor children of schools in village home Pakshail under Borolekha Upozilla of Moulvibazar. Ceiling fan, computers are given to Madrasa and schools as and when required. She directly oversee these activities and manage the funding for these initiatives.
  - In winter blankets are distributed regularly to poor and during flood dry foods are distributed to victims.
  - Help to Rana plaza victims:
  - Food, medicine, Oxygen and clothes were distributed to Rana Plaza victims on 3^rd day of accident.
  - Free Friday clinic: Wadood Moimunnessa Foundation conducts free Friday clinic in Pakshail, Borolekha, Moulovi Bazar, on every Friday since 14^th April 2012. There is no treatment facility available in 4/5 villages of that area, Medicines are distributed free of cost on an average of 200 patients per week.
  - Free circumcision camp was conducted on 15^th April 2016, 14^th April 2017, 14^th April 2018 and 2019 in Pakshail village of Borolekha Upozilla of Moulvibazar. Hundred cases were performed.
  - Free circumcision camp was conducted in same place of free Friday clinic on 14^th April 2017 Friday and 32 cases of circumcision performed.

Child Heart Trust Bangladesh:

Another charitable organization which collects zakat money of members and relatives in a fund then provides treatment cost of poor patients with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD). She shared the concept and requested National Prof MR Khan to preside the organization which will provide an umbrella of coverage to poor patients unable to afford the sophisticated treatment required for CHD. So far, 12 patients were treated by open heart surgery and intervention. As member of CHTB, Brig Gen Fatema also provide free treatment to these patients in her evening OPD. Under the Banner of CHTB world Heart day was celebrated several times and Brig Gen Fatema organized those by own financing and presented scientific papers.

Free heart screening camp was conducted in Baroibari village of Pubail on 21^st February 2016 where 30 children were screened and 3 were found positive for CHD.

On 30^th April 2017 Heart screening camp was conducted on 600 class one children of Adamjee cantt school.

On the occasion of foundation ceremony of CHTB in June 2019, free heart screening camp was conducted in Ten Taka school Basabo and 300 students were screened and examined, echocardiography was performed on suspected cases.
- - Charity Cardiac Surgery and Intervention in CMH Dhaka in collaboration of Little Heart, KSA and Muntada Aid, UK: Brig Gen NN Fatema was the mentor of this charity mission, which happens twice a year . In Bangladesh many children are suffering from congenital heart disease and they succumb to death as no treatment facility is available for them inside country. Expert doctors from King Faisal Research Hospital of KSA responded to her invitation to give treatment free of cost to the poor children of Bangladesh. DGMS office of Ministry of defense gladly accepted the proposal of helping poor patients by allowing CMH Dhaka as base hospital to provide infrastructural support. Financial support was given by Al Muntada Aid of UK.

So far three missions were conducted. In first mission in October 2014, 19 patients were operated and 21 interventions were done. On Feb 2015, 2^nd mission was completed with 27 open heart surgeries and 52 interventions along with 27 cardiac catheterizations. In 3^rd mission December (5^th to 12^th) 2015 , 56 interventions and 37 surgeries were performed. All were performed free of cost ( Equal to 15 crore Taka).

Camelia Marium Foundation : As chief advisor , she founded Camellia Marium foundation on 23^rd September 2020 under chairmanship of Marzia tabassum . Aim of this organization is to help new mothers in embracing motherhood with ease and joy, to help detecting any fetal problems, Fetal and neonatal screening , encourage breast feeding and support mothers having babies with congenital malformations and syndromes.

Congenital Heart desk foundation Bangladesh :

She Founded CHDBD in 2014 with an aim to train new pediatric cardiologist and to aware and educate parents of congenital heart disease patients about the disease. This foundation is organizing online lecture classes every Friday from 5.3.21 in collaboration with Narayana Health for Fellow and MD students of pediatric cardiology, Syllabus will end on August 2021.

Online Lecture classes started Sept 30 2022 and finished on 05.01.2024.

Charity interventions are performed in every week in Lab aid Cardiac hospital and Bangladesh specialized hospital

Qatar Red Cresent Charity: 20^th Feb to 25^th Feb 2018

Brig Gen Prof Nurun Nahar Fatema convinced Qatar Red cresent society to conduct charity for non surgical intervention in CMH Dhaka and 75 cases were treated in collaboration with Wadood Moimunnessa Foundation which worth 1.5 crore taka.

Al Muntada Aid Permanent charity in Bangladesh:

Brig Gen prof Nurun Nahar Fatema convinced Al Muntada Aid to donate money to one hundred poor patient with congenital heart disease in Bangladesh every year for open heart surgery. So a permanent charity centre was eshtablished in April 2016. Dr Rukonuzzaman Selim was selected to perform these surgeries in Ibrahim cardiac center and MOU was signed as such with that Hospital. Dr Fatema worked as supervisor of this program. Already 150 cardiac surgeries were performed from May 2016.

Fifty five charity percutaneous interventions and 11 cardiac surgeries were performed from 30.5.22 to 4. 6.22 . inaugaural program was held in DMCH and BSH. Muntada Aid UK team was composed of CEO Naif Sheikh, Coordinator Kabir Meah, Cardiologist Dr Abdulla from Turkey, Intensivist Loyi Abdul Kameed, anaesthetist, Cath lab manager Theo Van Kerkoff and nurses ,perfusionists etc.

Wadood Moimunnessa Community Hospital:

Started its activity from 19^th September 2020.

It is situated in village Pakshail where Mr late M A Wadood was born. All emergency medical services are available for the villagers.

Personal Charity:

Brig Gen Nurun Nahar Fatema performed many personal charity by her own for her poor patient , colleagues, relatives which includes free Intervention, Consultation and Medicine distribution , financial support for treatment abroad. She donated many instruments and disposable items to her department to establish and run activities of her own center. Pediatric cardiology center CMH Dhaka initially started its activities with her

Own disposables and hard wares which she received as gift from Prince Sultan Cardiac center KSA.

Awareness creation:

Brig Gen Nurun Nahar Fatema has visited almost all Medical Colleges of Bangladesh to deliver lecture on awareness creation about detection and management of Congenital Heart Disease. Her lecture encouraged junior Doctors to take Paediatric Cardiology as Profession. She had created awareness for CCR by taking classes, helding workshops etc and circulated video to all including social media on how to resuscitate a victim in any place where medical support is not available.

Academic Activities:

She is bringing scholarship from different countries for Junior Doctors and Nurses to enrich Paediatric Cardiology as a specialty..
To acknowledge and encourage best scientific research work in Pediatrics. she is giving “Wadud Moimunnessa Gold Medal” to the Pediatrician through Bangladesh Paediatric Association once in two year.
She Travelled different countries to learn latest Interventional technologies and Later transfer those to her own Hospital and different Institutes through Lectures, Seminars, Symposiums and Publications.
She has published a book on Congenital Cardiac Intervention , named ” Congental Cardiac Interventions & Research Work in Bangladesh”.
She has prepared video on cardiopulmonary resuscitation to create awareness on CPR by general population . Road traffic accident, Drowning and electric shock situation were taken as example of giving CPR which were sponsored by Wadud Moimunnessa Foundamtion. These videos were uploaded in you tube, Wadud Moimunnessa face book page and desperately seeking Dhaka FB page.
She wrote another book “Notes on Paediatric cardiology “ in 2016.
She has prepared 8 protocols on various subspecialty of paediatrics with the help of research team in The dept of Paediatrics CMH Dhaka. She also published a book on care of neonates and mother and another book on basic and advanced life support.
Wadood Moimunnessa Gold Medal has been awarded every year to best research work conducting doctor in BPA conference once in two year. First prize is a gold medal and Second prize is 10000 Taka .
Online lecture series on Pediatric cardiology organized BY Congenital heart desk foundation and Narayana Health from 5.3.21 every Friday for next six months. Inaugauration 19.3.21 by Dr Devi Prashad shetty.
Eshtablished Dept of pediatrics as centre of examination for FCPS part 2, 2018.
Eshtablished FCPS pediatric cardiology course in BCPS 2018.
Proposed pediatric critical care course in BCPS and accepted 2019.
Organized First international seminar on congenital heart disease on 31.10.2009 with major funding and invited 20 imminent cardiologists and surgeons from abroad and encouraged pediatrician to choose this subject as subspecialty. That was the impetus for rapid growth of pediatric cardiology. PM Sheikh Hasina inaugurate that seminar.

Placement of two Melody pulmonary valves to Adid 9 an old bo,y and Tasfia 13 years old girl. Both
of them were cases of Pulmonary Atresia VSD and PDA. They had BT shunt and ICR with conduit
before. Late, they developed conduit dysfunction. So, Melody’s valve was planned. Implanted on 10th
October 201,6, with the help of Dr Stephan Schuber, a Doctor from Berlin Heart.
