Short Biography of Brig Gen NNF

  1. Brigadier General Professor Nurun Nahar Fatema (Retd) was born in October 1962 in a respectable Muslim family.
  1. She passed MBBS (obtaining 2nd place) from M.A.G Osmani Medical College in 1985 and joined the Army Medical Corps of Bangladesh Army as a medical officer in 1987.
  1. She passed FCPS in Pediatrics from BCPS in 1995 and went to Prince Sultan Cardiac Center in Riyadh, KSA for training on Pediatric Cardiology in 1996 for two years and was appointed there as a senior registrar during her training time due to her sincerity, efforts and devotion.
  1. After her return in 1998, she was appointed as Chief Pediatric Cardiologist of CMH Dhaka. She has served as a classified child specialist and paediatric cardiologist in different military hos­pitals (CMH) and as an instructor in the Armed Forces Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh. At pres­ent, she is the advisor and head of the department of Pediatrics and Advisor Pediatric Cardiologist CMH Dhaka and Professor of Armed Forces Medical College and HOD paediatrics in Kurmitola General Hospital.
  1. Brigadier General Professor Nurun Nahar Fatema (Retd) is the pioneer Pediatric Cardiologist of Bang­ladesh and she has established the concept of congenital cardiac intervention in the country, before which open heart surgery was the only option for treatment in some simple cases.
  1. She established Pediatric Cardiology Unit at CMH Dhaka in 1998, which is the first ever and only pediatric cardiology unit of the country which is capable of dealing with all types of pediatric cardiac emergencies and interventions. She performed more than 7000 pediatric cardiac interventions.

 She also invented many new techniques in cardiac interventions which saved many lives and money of our country. Her protocol named as NNF protocol for PPHN and cyanotic spell is widely used and saving life of hundreds of newborn and children.

  1. She was the country representative of the Asia Pacific Society of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in 2006. She is the founding chairman of the scientific Committee of the Pediatric Cardiac Society of Bangladesh (PCSB) and current Vice President. She is also been the vice president of Child Heart Trust Bangladesh since 2014 and the founder treasurer of Wadud Moimunnessa Charitable Foun­dation. She is the supervisor of Al Muntada Permanent Charity in Bangladesh, which offers free surgery fora  hundred poor children in Bangladesh.
  2. Professor Nurun Nahar Fatema is the lifetime member of Bangladesh Cardiac Society, Bangladesh Pediatric Association and Bangladesh Heart Research Association, Bangladesh Perinatal society and Bangladesh neonatal Forum. 
  1. She has more than 100 publications in different esteemed national and international medical and scientific journals. She has participated in more than hundred national and international seminar and presented scientific papers.

 

10. Professor Brig Gen Nurun Nahar Fatema has published several books, including
(1. “Congenital and Structural Heart Diseases and Intervention:  Research Work in Bangladesh”
2. Fatema’s Basic Pediatric Cardiology,
3. Manual of Basic and Advanced Life Support (ALS, BLS),
4. Guidelines for the Management of Congenital Heart Disease (In Children and Adults) and Pediatric Acquired Heart Disease care of newborn and pregnant mother, etc).

  1. She is involved with many social activities including free Friday Clinic, free circumcision camp, donations to victims of natural calamity like Rana Plaza tragedy, Charity Cardiac Surgery and Intervention in CMH Dhaka in collaboration of Little Heart, KSA and Muntada Aid, UK and Qatar Red Crescent Charity. To encourage young Pediatricians, she is awarding gold medal and hono­rarium through her (family’s owned) WM foundation.
  1. She was awarded with FRCP from the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburg and FACC from the American College of Cardiology in 2009, and FSCAI from society of cardiovascular angiography and intervention in 2011 for her outstanding contribution and performance in the field of Pediatrics and Pediatric Cardiology.
  2. In recognition of her work, she received the INDEPENDENCE AWARD, the highest state award, on 25th March 2019 from honourable prime minister Sheikh Hasina
  3. She was awarded with SHENA BAHINI PODOK (SBP), the highest peacetime award of the Bangladesh army, in November 2019.
  4. She is a well-travelled personality. She visited many countries mostly for participating seminars and workshops (more than 25) abroad. These entire endeavors were made for technology transfer and implementing “State of the Art” technology in our country.
  1. Brig Gen Fatema is happily married to Col (Rtd.) Azhar Uddin Ahmed and blessed with two bright daughters who are following the steps of their accomplished parents. Her elder daughter is the Global Head of Business Governance and Controls, Institutional operations, ANZ Banking Group Limited, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, and her younger daughter is a medical student of Manchester University, UK
